[WASTE OF LOVE AND OF THE HUMAN SPECIES] (2011)

This is a work done in connection with a doctorate from the author, researcher in art-science-environment at the University of Coimbra and is part of a series of interactive installations monitored by computers, whose themes, techniques and practices are closely linked to the Earth, the Environmental Sustainability and the Protection of Nature. A future presentation / exhibition entitled [Neurological Landscapes] is to be held in Portugal - Coimbra - Casa das Caldeiras.

VISIBLE ELEMENTS OF THE INSTALLATION: 3D: - The real fish alive in an aquarium with water; - Video camera; - Small spotlight - with tripod and eco-light; - Video Projector; - Projection panel with packaging of expanded polystyrene (PS); 2D: - Medical Imaging with the resulting CAT scan - with anatomical structures of the human head visible through a square of light and color that lights up by means of the fish-performer;

OBJECTS OF STUDY: - Digital treatment (color, light and form) of the CAT medical imaging (originally in black and white); - Exploration of interactive software: real-time capture, manipulation of image, light, color, shape, background and augmented reality of the composition; - Interactive video projection; - Supports for video projection with reused artificial material;

Full Description

[WASTE OF LOVE AND OF THE HUMAN SPECIES] is an interactive installation of exhibition entitled [Neurological Landscapes] consisting of the capture (real time) of images of a fish called The Performer, which lives in a small urban aquarium.

The fish in its dance, in its path of real movements, in its day to day behavior, eventually interacts with the interior of a human head with the skull, but without the representation of the brain, with the upper and lower jaws, with the mouth, teeth, nose and closed eyes of the author herself.

The head and its structures are likely to be visible to the public only with the performance of the fish which, in its attitude as a dancer, turns on squares of light and color (previous digital manipulation work) and, in its participatory approach, fully shows the big image of the head, showing in detail what may already exist - in the Digital Age of Aquarius and about the human species.

The author’s head is represented by a medical imaging - a subject of interest for the study and exploration of the artist and researcher. This image is also the result of a CAT scan - computed axial tomography (medical examination performed to the author herself in collaboration with Inês Carreiro (neuroradiologist of the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra - Portugal)

The result of this interaction of the fish and the human head is to be seen on packaging of expanded, disposable polystyrene (PS), placed side by side in inverted position and that, taken together, serve as a giant video projection panel. The disposable packages are the ones we buy in hypermarkets, on a daily basis, with meat, fish, vegetables or something else and which are reused in this work and therefore given another function, imprinting a surprisingly contemporary technological language to this artistic work.
