What are the politics and ethics of representation? What does it mean to preserve a disappearing group through film? (we were disappeared) is a short documentary about the FNLS (the National Front of Fight for Socialism), a political group of mainly indigenous farmers from the Mexican States of Chiapas and Oaxaca, who have been attacked, robbed from, and displaced from their communities. Paramilitary groups, who have been funded, armed, and trained by the Mexican government are responsible for the disappearances. The Mexican government has a long-standing tradition of training right-wing, pro-State militant factions, and unfortunately isn't alone in this practice. At least two members of the FNLS, Edmundo Reyes Amaya and Gabriel Alberto Cruz Sánchez have been disappeared. They are currently encamped in protest, in the Zocalo, the main public square in San Cristóbal. This project is an attempt to make legible thier voices, to re-present them to an indernational audience, to bring them attention which will hopefully put pressure on the state and local governments in Chiapas which allow for this kind of violence to persist.
