TAPE NUMBER ONE (2011)

TAPE NUMBER ONE is a mixed videotape that blends poetics, performance, costuming, hand-made props, found footage and homemade music. The tape currently consists of twenty-five tracks presented as individual song dedications. These short vignettes reflect direct and indirect encounters that have either, altered my perception, manifested themselves in my memory or warranted a demand for visual celebration. The tape is an incomplete visual monument, a documentary continuously being built upon through bits of poetry honoring the past. Side one of the tape has been completed and can be viewed at www.tapenumberone.com

Full Description

TAPE NUMBER ONE's orchestrated delivery of spoken word and low-fi soundtracks drive the visual collages. Unusual word-image combinations and faceless costuming gives the work a surreal logic. The tape mix embodies a sensitivity to the transient, fluctuating states of our being while keeping an eye on the beauty of vulnerability in passages of time, changes in relations and shifting of perspectives.

The videos in TAPE NUMBER ONE take the form of recorded gestures, recitation of words, character driven performance, song, visual collages and typically combinations of these approaches to time based media. The narration for the work is often transformed from oration to embellished orchestrations of repetition, pitch alterations and sustained tonalities that at times convey more of a musical quality then that of spoken word. As a new media artist, I am interested in this boundary. The area where spoken word and song collide against moving images to create works that are less definable as simply poetry or music videos, but instead examine the language that can develop through their co-existence in a digital format.
