Trunk (2011)

A single frame animation. Part of the Breathing Pictures project.

Full Description

Trunk is an animated still-frame. I’m not sure that’s the best description. It was made as an animated gif but converted into an .mov file because the high res gif was too large to play on the web (or at least, too large for my server to stream smoothly). My intention is to make the image unfold fluidly on any mobile platform, or as a projection. The file is loaded into a simple browser frame and plays on a continuous loop; it is sized for good detail on a small screen.

With these pieces I’m again thinking about the slow evolution of thought in conjunction with experience, and about how the act of perception is also an act of creation. But here, I’m not looking at the disintegration of the picture (as in the Breathing Pictures montages). Rather I’m thinking about the way a picture emerges from purposeful attention, and from a kind of intensity that paradoxically requires loose flexibility.

I like how subtle it is -- at first, it looks like a straight photo, but with a sense of something being off, until the effect registers.
