Escape is my response to a lonely city. Escape is my reaction to a national defense policy that breeds fear and paranoia. It is a series of home-made safety gear made from re-purposed materials and ubiquitous craft felt. Jackets velcro together to form personal living spaces that inflate from suitcases. Tongue-in-cheek training videos, manuals, and posters prepare users for emergency situations whilst asking, "Is this how we really want to live?" Protection serves as metaphor for the psychological shields that put up against "shock effects," Freud's term for experiences for which we are not yet prepared and thus leave us emotionally scarred.
