the use (2009)

theuse.info is an effort to render Mann’s dictum in a web-based format— “Language is the mechanism whereby you understand what I’m thinking better than I do (where ‘I’ is defined by those changes for which I is required)”.

While performing the function of a portfolio/archive of Mann’s recent works in sound, text and video—its presentation, based on a modular, patch-cord synthesizer, allows the user to listen and compose at once. His sound work, which balances somewhere between lecture, stand-up comedy, Beckett monologue, and a form uniquely Chris Mann, is broken up into short loops that can be played and layered on demand.

In addition, a search bar allows for free-form exploration of the text that each sound piece is based on—entering any keyword brings of fragments of text from across the body of work presented.
