Symforest (2009)

Symforest is an interactive installation/experience manipulated by human emotion.

As a participant walk through the small dark forest in the room with a lantern, audio events (field recorded sound, narratives etc..) are activated depends on where he/she is. Galvanic Skin Response sensor, which detects emotional arousal of its holder by measuring sweat level on the skin surface, is embedded in the lantern handle; therefore, the lantern light changes its brightness depending on the emotional condition and controls audio volume. Therefore, each person has different impression of the space.

My focus in this piece is on exploring body’s memory and skin consciousness. For example, unfamiliarity in familiarity. Nighttime often makes familiar scenes in daytime very unfamiliar. Symforest is an interactive installation/experience manipulated by human emotion.

In this situation, you can rely only on your body perception to explore the new space. This act of engraving the memory of experience in mind becomes “experience and familiarity” to light up the unfamiliar, darkness.

My first encounter was when I was going home from my junior high school at night. It was the way I take everyday, but it was so different that I thought I got lost. What I saw, heard and smelled…everything was new….. But I also felt that my body reacted to the environment. Heartbeat, breathing, sweat in hands and footsteps -- my whole body is relative to what is happening in space. This experience with the environment is the key element of this installation. If you feel affective feeling like anxiety, fear and anger, even a tiny sound becomes much more distinctive because you are so focused and engaged with the environment… Emotional experience is personal experience.

Like a soft light of a lantern, my body slowly start exploring the new world….
