Mini Sound Spaces of Boston (2009)

Mini Sound Spaces of Boston is a 6 piece series that features various "overlooked" sound spaces throughout Boston and it’s neighboring Cambridge, Jamaica Plain, and Brookline. For these sound spaces to activate, a participant (or "user") must become physically active in the space or physically interact with the environment. The participant must generate a noise, such as a handclap or whistle, transforming the space and forcing the participant (who now becomes the "viewer") to reevaluate what once was simply an alleyway, a tunnel, or an underpass.

This piece, in a strictly fundamental sense, is simply trying to reveal organic beauty found in an urban landscape. These sound spaces begin to play with our perception of “the city.” After participating and experiencing a Mini Sound Space, ideally, the participant will travel in the future bearing in mind the subtle, yet beautiful spaces that surround us in the everyday.
