Ann Coulter : Human Document (2009)

The site's origin was a dream I had (on July 4, 2009), in which "everyone was talking about the clever new web site that takes Ann Coulter's words and subjects them to the Tom Phillips 'A Humument' treatment — producing random phrases of great wit and poetry." I decided to make such a web site as an ongoing visual blog. Each week I take conservative pundit Ann Coulter's web column and digitally paint out most of the text and ads, leaving chance phrases and images the author never intended (similar, of course, to Phillips' "treatment" of the Victorian novel "A Humument" by W.H. Mallock). The site was not particularly intended as a critique of Coulter's persona and politics, though some of the results can be read that way. I find, as Philips did of Mallock, that the absent author becomes a "character" in the piece.
