This project presents a series of historical events defined by an ephemeral quality: smoke. As an intangible thing, the press-image of a plume emanating from something now lost has been the remaining signature of a question that resists the simple resolution of a sound-bite or headline. Cycling through at brief intervals, the split-flap display board gives one example after another of these signatures. The images’ persistence in the media coupled with the mechanical reproduction and the grotesque pixellation continue a question of comprehension or legibility.
