Filled: Augmented Physique (2008)

Filled: Augmented Physique In this work, Filled, my major focus is “tentative display”. The researches on Augmented Reality (AR) and filmic frame/champ lead me to the significant values of projections. A projector often becomes a major light source for moving images. However, the projected images cannot go beyond the boundary of the frame. Filled aims to show how the light source can alter the entire meaning of an object in real world. For example, when the pedestal gets its own individual dimension in a single frame, the pointed object will be able to “act” something else because it gains a shape to be.

Pablo Valbuena's Augmented Sculpture v 1.0. is the initial inspiration. The piece investigates space-time not only as a 3D environment, but as space in transformation revealed by two layers that overlap each other. The physical layer, which controls the real space and shapes the volumetric base that serves as support for the next level and a virtual projected layer that allows to control the transformation and sequentiality of space-time. The blending of both levels gives the impression of physical and transformable geometry. The overlapping produces an euclidean 3D space augmented by a transformable layer that Pablo can control to alter multiple dimensions of space-time.

This is also deeply dedicated to my love and hatred toward technology. The age I was born is already digitized world. Through technology I had so much fun and gained a lot of advantages of it. Yet, simultaneously it was also my enemy for young myself that kept sucking my parents' attention to me all the time. The hatred grew gradually. Moreover, since digital technology flows like water, it synchronizes my experience of being nearly drown. The feeling of being unable to breath in the silence has an indescribable fear. Yet, this is true that the footsteps sound of death can bring us the memory of the birth. This experience is what we have forgotten since we got out of womb. The observation of dualities between “love and hatred” and “death and birth” sculpt a life.
