Outer Sanctum (2006)

At this point in my life I was undergoing chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I literally felt as if I were being "washed away," as if I were fading. I had no hope of enjoyment of life whatsoever, as the chemo took me down and the steroids brought me up. The only sanctuary I found was in the artistic process.

This piece is literally derived from an unfinished hand-drawn drawing that had water spilled on it. The ink is blurry as a result. I added photography and either a catscan or a petscan (I'm not sure which). It is meant to explore identity, illness, and gender issues. Women in this society usually are photographed or painted nude for use in art. I refer to my self-portraits as the "ultimate nudes."
