Watching Hurtman (2008)

This game is made up of 5 levels, each of which puts the player into a different perspective.

In level 1 Hurtman (a generic drawn figure) lies in a void with one eye wide open. The player can move the cursor over the still body and click whatever can be clicked. This will trigger predictable violence that is inflicted onto Hurtman. The player will be constantly interrupted by inquisitive questions about him/herself, making the task of clicking seem all the more absurd, maybe also making the player feel uncomfortable. The photo of 9/11 is a disruption (as the event indeed was) that might confuse the player as to what the context of this pain and what his own role here is. Some might even sweepingly suggest that 9/11 announced the end of our hedonistic society - or at least disrupted it.

Full Description

In level 2, as you roll the cursor over the sattelite image of a city, information lights up in a speech bubble (as actually happens in Google Earth, strangely implying an act of speech). The info corresponds to the questions in level 1. Since 9/11 ever more banalities are being monitored by organizations and the government. The position of the player now shifts to one of a surveillor.

Level 3 is a puzzlefrom a well-known picture from Abu Ghraib. I was impressed by the aesthetic compositions in some of these photos. Making a puzzle fit is an act of composing and here it is rewarded with an abstracted picture. The puzzle pieces snap into a pretty sculpture-like shape when they are placed where they „belong“.

Level 4 is a conventional memory game set up. The player is supposed to find the pairs of 9/11 pictures. These images of the Twin Towers have been repeated endlessly in the media, burning themselves into the back of our mind. It seems paradox, and also very hard, to play a memory game with this visual material.

Level 5 leads back to Hurtman but the player has a different „task“. Hurtman’s head floats in space, unmoving apart from the one eye blinking. This eye insinuates that there is some awareness in the figure. The player might search for buttons to click - stroking the cursor over Hurtman’s head. But nothing is inflicted. The player wins the level for clicking the obvious button „click to complete game“.
