JOE SENT ME | Barcelona Poesia 2008 (2008)

I was a guest Poet at this year's Barcelona Poetry Symposium.

The aim for my virtual presentation is to break down each poem into its component parts: word/page sound/mouth structure/form rhythm/repetition reader/interpreter eye/viewer meaning/intonation imagination/interpretation

I have conceived of this page as a living document, where each poem takes on a life of its own outside of the writer and the written hand. The internet provides the perfect vehicle for the nuances of poetry, for the transportation of its substance, for the transmission of its message through time. Raw computer coding languages hold within them pure poetic potential: the hope is to shape new ways of perceiving technology and its relation to language, music, things remembered, things heard, reflection, recollection and the spoken word.

Some of the poems appear static when viewed on the page - however, I've used a Javascript code that enables the words and letters I've created to be moved and rearranged, allowing the viewer to give new meanings to the poems, turning reader into re-interpreter. I invite viewers to send me their screenshots of their versions of my poems.

The poems and images on this page provide some of the working material for my new album, 'Joe Sent Me'. I use my voice as both confession and invitation, approaching each song/poem as though it were a secret message. 'Joe Sent Me' grew out of a journal of notes and sketches I began in September 2001.

I'm interested in the aspects of desire which give urgency to the act of creation. I often search for words in Google in order to find patterns and explore the poetics of similar and shared experiences between people. This juxtaposition, of public and private space, personal and universal, distant and up-close, resides at the heart of every web page. Despite its public accessibility, the internet provides the viewer with, at its core, true intimacy and immediacy of experience.

I'm especially interested in the idea of recording as an act of preservation of experience. To be a recording artist is - quite literally - to make a record of sounds, voices, words, and breaths. I have conceived of 'Joe Sent Me' as a time capsule, capturing, distilling and preserving the essence of my experience of the world post 9-11. For me, music is a response to the world, and the voice imbues the words with life and gives them breath.
