This is thus far a proposal with Rhizome.

This work accumulates a database of rejected project proposals and through genetic algorithms breeds new super proposals that are customized to specific grant and commission criteria. In essence, an artificial artist remixes new proposals that are designed to fit specific selection requirements. New proposals are created for actual projects that are intended to solicit real monies. Approved projects will be realized in accordance with the granted proposal.

A first exhibition to test a prototype is planned for September 2008. An invitation and call for rejected proposals will go out to artists, curators, researchers, etc. These proposals will be entered into the database and the process of recycling from the intellectual landfill of dismissed ideas can begin. Other calls for rejected proposals will be done online as well as similar exhibitions in other places. Furthermore, the possibility exists to fabricate criteria for exhibition suggestions.

The acquisition of rejected material is critical to this project. Following the experience of rejection after invested emotional and intellectual work, this piece offers new purpose and therapeutic relief by bringing to light the arbitrary and reductive ways that ideas are treated in the grant processes. It suggests that grant criteria supersedes innovation and questions the concept of what can be counted as originality.
