Mecca (2007)

Being more of a conceptual artist than photographer, I feel that it is important to set up situations (images) that give the viewer a say in the "story" they conceive. I try to give a hint of a direction with the title, but leave interpretation to others. (I do have personal meaning behind my work but would rather not foist it upon the viewer.)

In Mecca, I have chosen a title that suggests direction (towards Mecca) and religiosity, specifically the Muslim faith. As you see in the image, not all of the "beings" are facing the same direction; why? You will also see, perhaps, a Christian rather than Muslim symbolism in the use of fish to create the beings. Is that a conflict? If this image engages a viewer, they have many routes of interpretation, all of which are valid.
