PROCESS: Devils Triangles (Reprise) is a song/machine for transporting the Bermuda Triangle to the American midwest. The triangulation of 12 major US Hub airports creates a figure or map which acts as the composition's score. This same map/score was made into a plan for a real harp which was built by John Kovac, a luthier in rural Virginia whom I discovered via his daily renditions of folk standards for harp on Youtube. The completed electric harp is included in the installation, and is playable by viewers, allowing them to perform with the machine. This piece was taken to the next conceptual step when it was shown at NASA's Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA, under a parked jet on the runway.
SUMMARY: Devils Triangles explores the arbitrary relationship of high speed travel and instant communication to the human perception of time and distance. The absurd premise of transporting the Bermuda Triangle, or creating a void over the nation's heartland via a machine which references some mix between fighter aircraft, sci-fi, empty icons, game shows, and a Constuctivist stage set has additional political/humorous connotations. Absurdity also lies in the structure of the piece; as a series of fabricated steel sawhorses with an eye piece referencing the Great Seal on the dollar bill backing. The sawhorse, often the object used to support the structure being worked upon , acts as the main modular component of the sculpture. Black like a void, or a stealth aircraft; its structure is as functional as it is futile. As in all of my work, Devils Triangles (Reprise) also explores the relationship between increased information and decreased communication; fetishism of "technology", futuristic and retro-futuristic forms, and a contradictory approach of sculpting in light and sound for more abstract means.
