Prayer 2.0 (2007)

Full Description

All my work deliberately has an element of audience participation; I strive to create things that exist for the viewer but (in some way) is also created by them. This work is no exception.

Prayer 2.0 is a web system that allows visitors to engage in a prayer-like action, but having the "deity" figure (in the traditional form of prayer) being replaced by other internet users.

Very simply the functionality is this; users log onto the website, leave their name, email address and a short message. This message is sent out to the other users of the website, and the users email address is added to the list of recipients.

Its an outlet for peoples' thoughts, using the internet as a medium.

Despite using the name "Prayer 2.0" I do not intend the main element of the project to be a criticism of worship or prayer; if anything it is the exact opposite- a celebration and a showcase of peoples "prayers" (whatever a "prayer" actually is!)

The largest single aim from my point of view is to stimulate peoples thoughts and creativity. The stimulus, in this case, is the magic moment in time when you receive somebody else's prayer in your email inbox; bringing with it the realization that YOUR prayer will also be in someone else inbox.

Have a look, have a go. As well as wanting to cause people to think and challenge their preconceptions of what a "prayer" actually is; I also want the there to be inherent fun in taking part.

All the best, hope to hear from you soon!

Joe
