interpretation of an African Mask... you have to see through the Mask encaustic on wood Although my media is 3000 years old! It is relevant to our world 1- because I don't believe in throwing our cultures away but on the opposite in integrating them in new ways. 2- it so happens that encaustic from "encaustikos" greek for to fuse, is actually Egyptian in its origin. the process is an alchemical one, making the wax by melting ingredients like beeswax and crystals ...then creating your colour from that base with pigments. 3- I consider that the revival of Egyptian Art is very important to the political context today. It brings Egypt in the living ARTS... Instead of being part of an immortal past with its pyramids, temples, and mommies , it continues to live providing an infinite revival, thus showing its real immortality, its adaptability to new forms. Granted, Egyptian Art was sacred and designed not to be seen by the public, only a glorious preparation to the journey of the Dead. Today's Art is part of the consumer's world, quite a drastic difference... So where is the bridge? J. Baudrillard could call it 'emancipation' participation.. For the work of Art to exist there is the need of "le Regard", "l'Autre". So the mystery is not completely lost but has become a symbol of life in death, of a continuum, which is well worth exploring. This particular piece is a departure point from more obvious symbology, the use of colours an a means for emotional expression. this is more serene. I am taking some distance an looking at a bigger picture.
