light sculpture (2007)

A light sculpture made with christmas lights encapsulated by coffee filters, parchment paper, and tea-stained wax paper

I was inspired by this Taoist teaching:

Thirty spokes converge at the hub but emptiness completes the wheel.

Clay is shaped to make a pot, and what's useful is its emptiness.

Carve fine doors and windows, but the room is useful in its emptiness.

What is is beneficial, while what is not also proves useful.

The work of art is a beautiful object on its own, but what also makes the experience pleasing is the activation of space around it. The physical work of art relies on the atmosphere, the open and empty space around it, to create a sensation for the viewer that makes the two inseparable.

In this work what is, is as important as what is not.
