4Walls (2006) (2006)

A digital installation that investigates the life that exists beyond the 4walls of the home: the neighbours. Using the technologies of digital projection and surround sound a space will be created to simulate a room in a house where a multitude of 'neighbours' are heard through the walls. Through the sensuous action of placing ear to wall, the audience engage with real-life narratives, fictions and found conversations that explore the underbelly of living in the company of virtual strangers.

The installation is created in situ through the construction of two walls that house a network of 14 speakers and a further two end walls used for the projection of moving image and an entrance/exit. Each 'speaker' wall consists of 7 speakers housed in self contained wooden frames forming cavities and these are sandwiched between two MDF fire retardant boards. Each wall is decorated with wallpaper that has a velvet tactile quality that is sensuous to the touch. The whole space will appeal to the senses, not just the eyes and ears.
