Cracks in the Concrete Jungle (2006)

What doesn't bend, breaks.

This project is a continuation of a series of work I have been developing for several years involving architecture, urban structures, deterioration, and neglect. I have been exploring the cracks and crevices that develop through the renovation and deterioration of buildings or architectural structures. The work has been site specific and has thrived in the cracks of cement walls, unfinished surfaces, neglected corners, or other imperfect spaces. I have chosen to use materials typically used in cosmetics or personal hygiene to comment on the absurd tendency to fix the surface of an issue, rather than core of the problem. These unlikely materials are used to create illogical repairs. In the end, the work in fact enhances or accentuates the flaws rather than fixing them. The work came about because in the absence of a studio space I had rely on galleries and other venues to provide space to develop my ideas. Rather than waiting for these opportunities, I have decided to turn to the city and have begun to use it as my exhibition space.

This project will take place throughout the five boroughs of New York City and will be documented and published as a blog to show the details, location, and photographs of each new work (http://cracksintheconcretejungle.blogspot.com/). The site specific works attempt to mend the cracks & holes of buildings, sidewalks, & other elements of urban structure. Currently, all works are created with Ivory Soap & are left to wash away. This blog, which will be updated frequently, is intended to tell the story of how this series develops.

I am excited about developing this work and I hope you enjoy the exposure to its progression.
