The Lies Project (2005)

My previous work is based on the assumption that the world is made up of a myriad of lies of all shapes, sizes, and persuasions. It explored notions of exaggeration, embellishment and tall-tale telling that constitute the act of lying. Anonymous participants, sheltered only by a transparent veil, could enter a series of 'lying booths' and submit their lies. The collected lies were then embroidered and treated using chemical processes so that only the stitch remained. In the original installation, the embroidered lies were pinned around the perimeter of a room and set just off the walls---enough to create a prominent shadow. One of the questions that the work raised is "What is present in this shadow?" Other questions, centered around the ideas of weaving and the stitch as silent records of traditionally feminine practices, also emerged.

Based on the original installation work, this web-based work continues to examine the act of lying---in cyberspace. In a space where deception runs rampant, The Lies Project investigates lying as both currency and tool in the transactions and construction of our everyday culture.

The world-wide web for me has references both to weaving and to stitching in its construction. Choosing a font and placing it on a page can be thought of as stitching a thread through a fabric. Linking pages on-line can be viewed as the weaving together of pieces of this fabric. My interest in working on-line is to examine the transition, translation, and integration of these traditional and virtual practices.

The Lies Project is structured as an interactive web-site where viewers are invited to enter a virtual lying booth and submit their lies. Participants' submissions continually generate woven networks of lies that in turn produce and sustain a virtual community. In addition, the website intervenes in the user’s lying process by altering the content and quality of the lies. Furthermore, the website occasionally poses questions to the user in order to break anonymity and prompt an interest in accountability. The Lies Project makes systematic alterations to the virtual world(s) that these lies attempt to construct---to question and challenge the power structures that are built with these words and that in turn govern our everyday interactions.
