In 1958 Jasper Johns's Flag paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery. He went on to produce numerous variations on this theme. The works were most notable for their conversion of a familiar and nearly invisible icon into a museum piece. Meanwhile, artist Brion Gysin and mathemetician Ian Sommerville were busy at the Beat Hotel in Paris developing the Dreamachine, a device that used stroboscopic effects to put the viewer's brain into Alpha waves (particulary useful for relaxation and meditation). The aim of this project is to fuse these ideas in order to create the americandreamachine.
