Swear Box 2005 is a development of a series of works in which Ellie observes, over the course of a year, small or insignificant details in her everyday routine. By accumulating data about these details they are, over time, transformed out of all perspective, and begin to allow a unique vision of the everyday life from which they came. Previous projects in this series (also viewable online under ‘Web Projects’) include:

  • ‘Eat 22’ where everything Ellie ate for a year was digitally photographed (total 1640 images).

  • ‘Gold Card Adventures’ where all journeys Ellie made on public transport in a year were recorded (total 9236 km was travelled).

  • ‘The Daily Quantification Records’ where statistics were collected about 14 elements of Ellie’s daily life each day for a year.

For Swear Box 2005, Ellie plans to note down all the sentences she utters which contain swear words throughout the year. These sentences are then added to the virtual Swear Box on a weekly basis.

Once inside the Swear Box the sentences move randomly with minds of their own. The sentences are displayed within speech bubbles. When the mouse pointer rolls over a speech bubble it changes to a thought bubble describing the incident which caused this particular outburst.

It is possible to use the mouse pointer to interact with the speech bubbles and to attempt to drag them away from the others so that they can be read more easily. Be warned: they're angry, they don't like being dragged and they'll do anything they can to escape.

The speed at which a speech bubble moves around the Swear Box is defined by the offensiveness of the swear word it contains. The more offensive the swear word is the greater acceleration the speech bubble has.

Within the Swear Box the speech bubbles are colour coded to indicate the month in which they occurred. As the year passes the swear box will become crammed full of a whole spectrum of colourful language.

The Swear Box aims to give a playful glimpse into the root causes of anger and frustration within Ellie’s life. In doing so it should give others the opportunity to consider the language they use on a day-to-day basis and to imagine what a yearly accumulation of their curse words would look like!
