The Perfect City (2004)

The concept of a perfect place has been around since at least as long ago as the Garden of Eden was first described in Genesis. Like other great themes of humanity, such as love, death, birth, revenge, and loyalty, the idea of perfection has intrigued humans throughout the history of literature, religion, and politics. The concept of a perfect place has been around since at least as long ago as the Garden of Eden was first described in Genesis. Like other great themes of humanity, such as love, death, birth, revenge, and loyalty, the idea of perfection has intrigued humans throughout the history of literature, religion, and politics. Utopia, paradise, the pure land, and heaven all have one thing in common, and it is their metaphysical representation of a philosophical, theological ideal of our place in the universe. We reflect all our longings and fears into our creation of that ideal, and in it we seek to understand ourselves.

We created a physical model of a “perfect city” based on structures dictated by Le Corbusier as being the foundation for a perfect society. We then filmed the model to create an abstracted, non-linear film structured on text sequences. The user is required to interact with the film through hyperlinks built into the images. The user interaction serves to both direct and realize the artwork itself and is meant to be a reflection of the user’s conscious as he contemplates the images, sound, and text. Our goal is to expose and raise questions in the viewer of how we view the concept of perfection in society.
