Urban transit 0'bodies (2002)

As an architect/video artist, I am fascinated by the world of urban transit. I am conductig research and experiences on space and movement of the subjective body in Non-Lieux, non-places (by the cameraman: myself).

The Non-Lieux are non-identity places, non-relational. It is the world of the transit, ephemeral, provisional, solitary individuality. The user of those spaces is alone but similar to the others. He is in contractual relationship to the places (or power which controls it). Hence, he is nothing any more but what he does. I am interested in the writing of Marc Auge and several theories of space (M.Merleau-Ponty, P.Kaufmann, G.Perec) as well as some artists (D.Graham, G.Hill).

About Urban transit 0'bodies

The videos in diptych function in loops shifted or not.

This video work is about 3 different places : a carpark, a corridor and a street. For each place, I have a double vision of the same space : hence, I created two different video/sound tracks about each of the three places:

Left-hand side monitor or ( video-projection): An emotional, significant, rhythmic, nervous vision of the space.

Right-hand side monitor (or video-projection): A specific, regular and apathetic (indifferent to any stimulus) vision of the same space. (security video cameras aesthetic, low resolution)

In this video work, I try to denounce the Objectivation of people (they become objects) and the totalitarian aspect of certain spaces. In addition to the shooting in itself (where the camera movements are very different in the video diffused on the right from the one diffused on the left), the sound and image processing is also treated with dichotomy:

Image treatment In each of the three videos of the left, there is an actual editing but the sound and the quality of the image are not transformed. There is no effect except for the third diptych where I wanted to arrive little by little to an abstraction. On the other hand, in each of the three versions of right-hand side, video tracks are more or less slowed down speed. I try to make the image coldest and the most neutral and artificial possible. I simulated technical disordered states of the image such as those caused by security video cameras.

Sound treatment I carried out the sound track in close relationship to the images mixing my own soundtracks with some samples influenced for these videos by J.Cage, K.Stockhausen and Neubauten.
