Are we the same people over time or do our experiences change us radically? Is it possible to measure these changes? When we write messages to ourselves in our diaries for instance, we are leaving reminder markers for ourselves in the future and we are attempting to compress time, bypass experience, and thus ensure some kind of continuity. "Letters Through Time" invites visitors to write letters to themselves 20 years into the future or 20 years into the past to examine who we were and who we dream of being. In the spirit of diary entries or messages in bottles, these letters are cast into time, forming reference points for measuring changes in our selves. But what changes when many people are all writing their letters together? Or that we have four weeks to write forty years worth of letters? In another area of the project, visitors attempt to answer the question of continuity by reading, comparing, and interpreting each other's letters. Here visitors also play with and critique the ideas of a collective self and anti-mechanistic time. Is it possible to catch the wind in a bottle? Can we have fun trying?
