Rhizome Internship Program

The Internship Program at Rhizome offers participants immersive training in the non-profit curatorial practice and a comprehensive overview of website operations. Interns also gain insight into the national and international world of new media art.

The following internships are available:

Interns participate in day-to-day operations in addition to working on specific projects. When making your arrangements, please keep in mind that internships are unpaid.

Eligibility

All interested individuals are eligible to apply for an internship. Qualifications vary for each intern and some positions may require college or graduate training and/or professional experience.

Curatorial Fellow

The Fellow will support the curatorial and editorial departments at Rhizome through research, writing and administration. This position is a unique opportunity for a person interested in pursuing a career in contemporary art to further their engagement with the field and hone their professional skills.

The Curatorial Fellow must be based in New York and must be able to commit to 16 hours of work per week, for 6 months, beginning in Fall 2009. This position is unpaid, but academic credit may be arranged. The Curatorial Fellow will work directly with artists and be overseen by the Director and Senior Editor.

The Fellow's primary responsibilities include:

  • - Coordination, and development of the Rhizome ArtBase, including managing submissions and reaching out to artists
  • - Curating sections of the Rhizome website
  • - Researching topics for editorial coverage
  • - Writing articles for Rhizome's blog and publications
  • - Administrative support of programs, such as Rhizome's monthly New Silent Series at the New Museum and an upcoming New Museum exhibition
  • - General support of the organization

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have a level of familiarity with contemporary art and particularly new media and its history. Education or advanced experience beyond the undergraduate level is preferred. At a minimum, the candidate should have very strong writing, editing, and analytical skills, and very high internet literacy. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software is also required and basic Photoshop skills are preferred.

Technology Assistant

Reporting to Rhizome's Director of Technology, the Tech Assistant position helps with the wide variety of tasks needed to maintain and develop the Rhizome site. These duties include updating and/or creating both static and dynamic pages, answering member inquiries, researching usability improvements, server management, and defining new website features. This position also assists with implementing each season's major tech projects, including an upcoming overhaul of Rhizome's ArtBase and the Rhizome website itself. This is an ideal position for a candidate seeking to hone their professional skills in programming, IT and web development.

The Tech Intern must be based in New York and must be able to commit to 16 hours of work per week, for 6 months, beginning in July 2009. This position is unpaid, but academic credit may be arranged.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be have technical experience in web design and/or programming. The position requires strong knowledge of HTML and CSS, and some familiarity with PHP, Javascript, and MySQL.

Social Media Internship

This Social Media Intern will help confirm and leverage Rhizome's audience through platforms including Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon and also contribute suggested new ways to galvanize attention around new media art. The position is 8 - 16 hours per week and can be worked from home or at the Rhizome office, which is located at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Manhattan. The intern will report to the Director and the Senior Editor to strategically promote specific events, calls and content. Applicants should be well-versed with the web and latest applications. Familiarity with audio and video production is preferred -- as the Social Media Intern will be asked to upload documentation of events. This position is a unique opportunity for a person interested in pursuing a career in online marketing and promotion.

The Social Media Intern must be based in New York and must be able to commit to 16 hours of work per week, for one semester or 6 months, beginning in mid-July 2009. This position is unpaid, but academic credit may be arranged.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be well versed with social media and the online environment. A keen interest in online marketing is a must. Education or advanced experience beyond the undergraduate level is highly desirable. The candidate should have very strong writing and analytical skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software is also required and basic Photoshop skills are preferred.
