INTERFACE and SOCIETY

In our everyday life we constantly have to cope more or
less successfully with interfaces. We use the mobile phone,
the mp3 player, and our laptop, in order to gain access to
the digital part of our life. In recent years this situation
has lead to the creation of new interdisciplinary subjects
like "Interaction Design" or "Physical Computing".

We live between two worlds, our physical environment and the
digital space. Technology and its digital space are our second
nature and the interfaces are our points of access to this
technosphere.

Since artists started working with technology they have been
developing interfaces and modes of interaction. The interface
itself became an artistic thematic.

The project INTERFACE and SOCIETY investigates how artists deal
with the transformation of our everyday life through technical
interfaces.
With the rapid technological development a thoroughly
critique of the interface towards society is necessary.

The role of the artist is thereby crucial. S/he has the freedom
to deal with technologies and interfaces beyond functionality
and usability ...

Hi Ryan,

It is indeed ironic that I would be criticized as a Benjamin disciple. You and Marisa understandably challenge my reading of him, but I think my reading is defensible, with some caveats. I'm not referring to his entire canon, or to his biographical history. I am referring to one text. In that text he himself says, "We do not deny that in some cases today's films can also promote revolutionary criticism of social conditions, even of the distribution of property. However, our present study is no more specifically concerned with this than is the film production of Western Europe." Indeed, the footnoted connections he makes between film and politics seem largely tenuous and speculative, almost like they are incidental observations that he wasn't quite confident enough to include in the body of the text.

The epilogue seems particularly tacked on. He takes the marinetti quote and runs with it, but in his rush to the tour-de-force finish line, he doesn't satisfactorilly connect all the dots. Just because he wants me to focus on the epilogue doesn't mean I have to buy it. Just because I don't buy the epilogue doesn't mean I can't find use in some of his prior observations.

I probably should have prefaced my original post with some disclaimer like, "I know this goes against the accepted interpretation of Benjamin's aura, but..." Nevertheless, I don't think his observations are off limits simply because I disagree with the larger conclusions he draws from them. Am I not free to take his initial observations and draw my own conclusions? I don't think aesthetics are a fascist control mechanism of war just because Marinetti was loony and Hitler was an art school drop-out who dug ...

New Tools For New Towns

Planned communities are all around us, and are often the object of scorn. What might be difficult to imagine today is that at one time, a certain breed of planned communities prevalent in the United Kingdom, called 'New Towns' were guided by optimistic visions of the future. East Kilbride was Scotland’s first New Town, and is documented in rich detail by artist Sylvia Grace Borda. Borda spent ten months living in and documenting East Kilbride, and the resulting digital archive is presented online as an interactive map. Borda’s project could prove to be an excellent resource to practitioners in several disciplines--including photography, architecture, and urban planning. The structure of Borda’s project is perhaps the most interesting aspect of all, in terms of the futuristic aspirations of archiving itself. By making the East Kilbride project an online archive, it is accessible to many, never 'closes,' and any original documents are unharmed. Borda’s project ultimately poses the question of whether the utopian visions manifested in New Town architecture mirror our hopes for our territories online? - Michelle Kasprzak

FACT, the Foundation for Art & Creative Technology is the UK's leading organisation for commissioning and presentation of film, video and new media art forms. FACT exists to inspire and promote the artistic significance of film, video and new and emerging media.

ZiZi the Afffectionate Couch (2003) :: Stephen Barrass, Linda Davy & Kerry Richens: An invention inspired in equal parts by a shaved poodle, a fluffy Persian cat, and an exotic alien sea slug, ZiZi growls when sat on, purrs when touched, and emits soft groans of delight if you stroke her long fur. If left alone, ZiZi mews for attention. ZiZi is an affectionate ottoman couch that asks for emotional support while offering physical comfort. The responses are triggered by touch-sensitive cables, which are sewn into the fluffy upholstery of the couch. While Barrass claims that ZiZi's personality is based on his pet Dalmatian Ziggy, we can safely assume that the artist does not sit on his dog.

Op Shop (1999-2002) :: Stephen Barass: Cluttered from floor to ceiling with bric-a-brac, Op Shop is a virtual environment that is transformed by sound. Unlike most interactive interfaces where communication occurs by means of a stylus, mouse or other device, Op Shop encourages collaborative interaction. By singing into the microphone a visitor can disturb the virtual objects; a high-pitched wail can shatter glass. By singing and sustaining a low note, they can smash a table. An ever-changing choral score emerges as multiple participants explore the effects of their vocal range. This cacophony of hums, croons, shrieks, claps and whistles, punctuated by percussive shattering and laughter, propels the visitor towards an unexpected finale.

Dislocation (2005) :: Alex Davies: What happens when we can't trust what we see with our own eyes? As visitors peer into the portals of Dislocation, they become auto-voyeurs seeing and hearing unnerving scenarios play out behind them only to discover the room is empty when they turn around. Ingeniously programmed by Davies to overlay pre-recorded sequences with realtime footage, the simultaneous presence and absence of these phantoms defies rational thought and experience, and creates a haunting atmosphere. The work creates an environment of deception and uncertainty whose subtlety and cunning displaces our reliance upon, and trust of, our own distinct emotional responses to the presence of others.

C.STEM conference (Part 1)

Looks like Italy is finally warming to art beyond Botticelli and Umberto Boccioni. Last weekend MixedMedia brought pixels, electronic music and experimental installations to the Hangar Bicocca in Milan, in July BIP will "build interactive playgrounds" in Arezzo and yesterday AB+ in Turin was hosting the C.STEM conference, an event dedicated to the cultural circulation of generative and procedural systems in the field of experimental digital art.

The event was organised by 32Dicembre, Teknemedia, Fabio Franchino and moderated by Domenico Quaranta. Every single person involved in the event seemed to be genuinely interested in the subject and they knew what they were talking about (something which shouldn't be taken for granted in Turin when it comes to digital arts.)

I had read about generative art but listening to the artists discussing their methods, motivations and explaining how they work with code gave me a better grasp on the genre. [More....]

sonambiente berlin 2006 - Sound Art Floods Berlin

I'm in Berlin for the next six weeks participating in sonambiente, a sound art festival that is dispersed throughout the mitte of Berlin. And thus far this has been one of the most diverse and exciting festivals that I've witnessed. While the underlying theme is the creative use of sound, the festival is composed of performance, installation, radio, sculpture and public intervention and to boot the opening weekend is bracketed by the end of the Berlin Biennial and the beginning of the World Cup, what more could one ask for in one of the greatest cities of the world.

On the opening night I only made it to one third of the evening events, so I will begin with works documented that evening and progressively present documentation of other works over the next several weeks.

On the first of June, I made it to Allianzgebaude am Ostbahnhof, this is an office complex of which sonamiente took over the mezzane, second floor and fifth floor, in which artists were given offices and conference rooms to create installations. Appropriately this part of the exhibition is titled sonambiente_laboratorium, since many of the installations seemed unfinished, experimental or created by young artists in very hipster fashion.

Amongst my favorite works were:




"Koexistenz" by Young-Sup Kim, 2006 in which the Korean artists recreates precious, traditional urns from white shelled audio cables that feed the audio into the speakers sitting within the urns. The urns are connected to play a multichannel composition of traditional Korean drumming created from household, everyday sounds. Perhaps I'm a romantic pushover, but I found this translation of two Korean traditions into contemporary art quite beautiful.



"The Perfect Shot" by Satoshi Morita, 2006 is whimsical, and very well produced. Various sports balls - soccer, golf, ping-pong, baseball sit one small ...
