A struggle is ensuing to produce and protect what is being called the Knowledge Commons in defiance of the latter day regime of enclosures around knowledge and informational goods. As with the pre-capitalist common lands on which the majority of people subsisted, the idea is that we can build a resource, a life source, of intellectual wealth to sustain people within informatic capitalism.

Dark Places

An experimental group exhibition

Curator: Joshua Decter

The Santa Monica Museum of Art presents Dark Places, conceived and curated by Joshua Decter, with an installation design by the architectural collective servo. An experimental group exhibition, Dark Places features the digitized works of 76 international artists and architects, organized into eight “curatorial scripts." The show is comprised of the simultaneous interplay of eight distinct micro-exhibitions. These sequences of works are displayed via eight projector units incorporated within a translucent architectural armature suspended in the museum’s space. Relationships among art, architecture, media, and technological design are reanimated here, generating a new kind of immersive environment—the hallucination of a futuristic noir scenario inside the frame of the museum.

Hi All,

This is just to announce that I have completed a book-sized manuscript about Genius 2000, and it is now available for free at my website www.geocities.com/genius-2000.

In this book I try to accomplish several things: the development of Genius 2000 ideas, the correction of certain errors, a reconciliation with the war on terror, and an acceptance of my personal problems (among other topics).

The book is written in the form of two thousand questions and answers, each about a paragraph long. I call each of these questions and answers a "quantum," in comparison to the original G2K ideas of "talent" and "kung-an."

Those who are already familiar with Genius 2000 will find new material here as well as further development of original concepts. Those new to Genius 2000 may be a little bit confused at first and may wish to refer to the other material on the site (such as the Video First Edition transcripts) before reading the MS. On the other hand, it may also be aesthetically preferable and more accurate to read the book first.

Fake European propaganda movie hits Austria and Bologna Mattes' grand artwork keeps on spreading in both the public and the media space.

'United We Stand' is the title of the much-hyped spy/action movie wholly produced by Europe, a large-scale propagandistic stunt that has in the past few months stirred much controversy. Too bad the movie doesn't actually exist, but it is instead the latest insane provocation of the artists' couple Eva and Franco Mattes, better known as 0100101110101101.ORG. After Berlin, Brussels, Barcelona, New York and Bangalore, the gigantic performance has now landed in Austria and Bologna.

While the movie itself doesn't exist, the actors and the flashy poster do. They portray the inspired faces of the main characters surrounded by the blue of the European flag and by ruesome war scenes. The movie's Web site also exists - www.UnitedWeStandMovie.com - and it is accompanied by an extensive advertising campaign covering half the globe, causing extreme reactions in both the streets and the media.

"United We Stand" Eva Mattes explains "mimics the typical Hollywood action movie where the US always wins and saves the world. We have used their clichéd visual elements, but we have replaced their flag with the European one. The outcome is quite disturbing, it seems to me that it better communicates what we often take for granted, rather than stating what it truly represents".

In the past months, the movie's posters have appeared on the remains of the Berlin wall, in front of the European Parliament, underneath the Empire State Building and on the picturesque walls of Bangalore, India. Like a number of artists of the Chinese avant garde, Huang Yan calls on China’s tradition of ink and colour painting in his works. His photos of a male model whose torso is painted in traditional Chinese landscape combine one of the great Chinese art forms with body art. Body replaces paper and the traditional art form becomes signifier. With an austere purity Huang Yan affirms his place as an artist of the Chinese avant garde. The series is called Tattoo, a play on the finished product but also an indication of something which cannot easily be removed.

My sabbatical from programming web applications is nearly over, and fortunately I do have something to show for it: OGLE, The OpenGLExtractor (pronounced Oh-Gull, as in the word, 'ogle'). This is the Eyebeam OpenLab's first new project of the year, with more to come soon.

OGLE is a software package that allows for the capture and re-use of 3D geometry data from 3D graphics applications running on Microsoft Windows. It works by observing the data flowing between 3D applications and the system's OpenGL library, and recording that data in a standard 3D file format. In other words, a 'screen grab' or 'view source' operation for 3D data.

The primary motivation for developing OGLE is to make available for re-use the 3D forms we see and interact with in our favorite 3D applications. Video gamers have a certain love affair with characters from their favorite games; animators may wish to reuse environments or objects from other applications or animations which don't provide data-level access; architects could use this to bring 3D forms into their proposals and renderings; and digital fabrication technologies make it possible to automatically instantiate 3D objects in the real world.

Some people in the lab are rather obsessive about their World of Warcraft characters. After capturing the character with OGLE and cleaning the geometry with Maya a little bit, we were able to render it into the real world with our Dimension BST 3D printer, as seen below.

Satellite of Love is the name of this commune, where surrounded by media-art of the most diverse dimensions, creators and viewers can meet in invigorating circumstances, where television is not only being produced but also newly thought through, and perhaps even reinvented. Manifold ‘lean forward’ presentations and workshops are being programmed (Tea Time TV) as well as ‘lean backward’ screenings of particular licks in television-taste (TV Dinners). Naturally, a smorgasbord of screens will also encourage encounters with national television, VPRO’s digital channel and local broadcasters; an inclusive variety of Exploding Television.
