Low-fi.org has aggregated some fresh new net.art projects, loosely curated with the premises that the works are good and interesting, and are in varying stages of completion. Uphone.org is a nascent telephone/RealMedia project, Ourganisation is a just-born forum for collaboration and exchange, and N55, a Danish collective's site, rethinks everything from sofas to snails. Superchannel, another project, provides tools and infrastructure to independent TV programming from around the world. I was hoping that Internet TV thing was going to come back!! Additional Net selections by Gair Dunlop and Lucy Kimbell make this low-fi round-up a resounding hit -- even the projects just getting started are worth bookmarking. -- Rachel Greene
Art collective to watch: de Geuzen, whose three core members are Dutch women Riek Sijbring, Femke Snelting and Renee Turner. de Geuzen's projects consider paradigms of open source (e.g. permeability, decentralization, emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience), and how these overlap with or diverge from historical and current female activities, tropes, wardrobes, and habits. Net artists have long been interested in film artists -- Olia Lialina, Lev Manovich, and Vuk Cosic, are well-known examples. An American artist experimenting with open source and cinema is Barbara Lattanzi. Currently Artist-in-Residence at Smith College in Massachusetts, Lattanzi has written a number of softwares, inspired by legendary experimental filmmakers like Hollis Frampton and F.G. Murnau, for use with video data. Applying her HF Critical Mass or AMG Strain to film segments will yield gorgeous results, so filmmakers should click on over, download tools (and code if desired), and create new, hybrid Director's Cuts. -- Rachel Greene
Launching today is 'Packet,' a new online exhibition space that takes its name from the packets of data that whiz round the internet and are reassembled at the end of their journey into a greater whole. 'Packet' will provide a stepping-stone space for students and artists new to digital media who haven't yet developed enough work for a full show. Exhibitions will change monthly, with the first artist being Roberto Pasang, followed by Johnny Liu in February and Kimberly Turner in March. In its 16th year, the Stuttgart Filmwinter - Festival for Expanded Media focusses on developments and changes in film and media. The theme of "Erdung" (Grounding) addresses the role of digital technology in real spaces, mobilisation and globalisation, and the shifting meanings of terms such as "home" and "root". An outstanding programme has been selected from 1300 submissions received, encompassing film, video, installations, CD-ROMs and online works. Established film-makers such as Matt Hulse and Dietmar Brehm are featured alongside emerging and experimental artists working with a variety of technologies. The festival runs from 16 -19 January, and audiences can vote online for their favourite internet projects from 9 January. For all its sprightly, good-natured energy, your arrow cursor leads a pretty isolated life. At Teleferique's HiddenCam, the familiar click-and-drag context of the cursor is lifted away, revealing a lonely protagonist who darts from place to place, endlessly in search of an elusive destination. Recording actual visitors' mouse movements on Teleferique's homepage, HiddenCam offers a surprisingly intimate, even strangely perverse kinetic screen grab of user personalities and emotions as acted out by their arrow. Some swirl in confusion, others move efficiently from spot to spot, but each of these mouse movies reveals the very private, immediate desire that motivates each soft click.
Keith Obadike auctioned off his blackness at Ebay. John Freyer sold his personal possessions at AllMyLifeForSale.com. And Karyn erased her $20,000 credit card debt in less than 5 months thanks to the generosity of total strangers. You may be asking yourself is this for real (also the first question in Karyn's FAQ section), and she responds: "I really am a chick who asked for help to pay off her credit card debt, and it really did work!" SaveKaryn.com is not a symbolic art act nor is it a parody of female stereotypes. It is a sincere sales-pitch that turned into a small enterprise. Now that the debt is gone Karyn sells "SaveKaryn" merchandise (t-shirts, Frisbees and lunchboxes) and gives kudos to "SaveKaryn" spin-off sites that abound. Karyn dug herself into a money pit thanks to a shopping disorder and wiggled her way out via a barebones site and a little side of sass. --Brooke Singer
If you thought blips and bleeps could only be produced by out-dated video game equipment, think again. Press Play On Tape, Copenhagen's premier Commodore 64 revival band, are sure to turn a few fragged heads. Using live instruments to emulate their childhood relics, this sextet churns out booty-shaking 8-bit sounds like the themes to 'Out Run', 'Ghost'n Goblins', and 'Commando'. Their website features a plethora of MP3s, photos from live shows, set lists, bios featuring favorite game picks, and even a their own 'Boy Band' video ready for download. Just on the edge of geek-chic, PPOT fills the musical void of trading code for congos. Who knows -- next up might be an acoustic version of Pac-Man Fever. -Jonah Brucker-Cohen
