If you have the impression that technology-based work, including art, is the domain of geeky white guys, it's no wonder, given the image presented by many festivals, conferences and books on the subject. But, thankfully, that dominance is being challenged both in theory and practice. One voice of contestation is Teknika Radica, a collective of women musicians, visual artists and writers that organizes events to engage, radically, technology and art. Their upcoming 'Powering Up/Powering Down' festival will be a three-day affair of performances, exhibits and workshops by an international list of artists and scholars dealing with the intersections between high tech, low tech and 'historically estranged communities.' The festival takes place on the University of California, San Diego campus and runs from tomorrow, January 30, through February 1. -Ryan Griffis
