Lighting the Low-Tech

Rick Doble is a guy with a digital camera and a mission to bring 'painting with light' to the world. His technique uses basic camera controls rather than digital manipulation to create interesting images, and he argues that photographers need to learn to be 'bad,' and that they ought 'to deliberately go after blurred, unsharp, oddly exposed images.' A passion for the motor car is revealed in his themes - including 'Cars,' 'Driving,' 'GoCarts' and 'Rain Through the Windshield' - but his subject range is fairly broad. The site provides extensive support material - essays, technical information, quotes and references - as well as hundreds of images. Amongst all this data are some great examples of what can be achieved with low-tech tools and a bit of imagination. - Helen Varley Jamieson
