Bump the List!

Bump the List!

By on Friday, June 13th, 2003 at 8:00 am.

Jonah Brucker-Cohen's project BumpList, showcased on the Whitney’s Artport website, functions as a musical-chair investigation into the hierarchy of email-lists. It allows individuals to subscribe to a limited number of ‘spots’ on a list –6 in all –wherein each new subscriber to the list ‘bumps’ off the oldest member of the list automatically. This algorithmic framework highlights future possibilities for the stratification of information within our seemingly democratic system of information technology. Through the subversion of the ‘open’ email list, BumpList proposes a disruptive and chaotic model of communication more akin to of the group dynamics of a competitive dinner conversation. BumpList explores how communication changes under pressures of competition. – Valerie Lamontagne
