Artist Michael Atavar has started a 6 month
creative research programme in collaboration with
the Digital Research Unit, Huddersfield.
At the end of each month for the next 6 months we
will publish the outputs on the DRU website.

Michael Atavar's early work took the form of live
performance but in recent years he has created a
body of considered, poetic and painterly works for
the www. Employing a minimalist aesthetic he
invites us to explore a landscape of colour,
populated with ideas, thoughts and reflections on
the nature of space, being, place and memory.
Recently Michael has begun to create
'virtual worlds' in VRML and Shockwave 3D,
extending and evolving his personal language. His
work, .sciis [sensitive cumulative intelligent
immersive systems], which can be downloaded from
his website, has been installed in a number of
locations as a large scale interactive projection.
The DRU Research Programme will allow Michael to
re-visit the performative elements in his
practise, and continue to evolve his e-says.

I’ve been looking at space.
we all live in it, walk through it and it
surrounds us constantly - but what is it?
in virtual worlds one of the main tasks currently
facing the artist is how to create real time
connections between user and screen, programming
spaces that the audience might actually want to
live in.
by looking at
houses
walls
buildings
streets
and concentrating on
atmosphere
welcoming
presence
being here
I hope to make connections between the world we
live in and the spaces that we might yet inhabit.
in the course of my research I’ll visit these
cities:
london
taipei
paris
tokyo
each monthly section of my DRU piece
concentrates on a particular place and
identifies a quality of space that each
location might contribute to this ongoing
debate.
