the upgrade

Here are some photos of last weekend's Upgrade brunch:

http://www.mteww.com/upgrade_brunch/

If you don't know what The Upgrade is, then you can look at this URL
and find out:

http://www.treasurecrumbs.com/theupgrade/

But, it's 'A monthly gathering of new media artists and curators in New
York City'

it was fun and there were krispy kreme donuts in effect.

Jess Losseby showed up and it was nice to meet her and her husband.

What would be helpful next time is for everyone to wear a "Hello My Name Is"
sticker with their email address on it.

I was there, but I didn't meet anyone from this list.

Dyske,
Well, I had a similar thought. I didn't realize that some of the people in
the photo's were there, but not because of a name tag, but because they
didn't simply come up to me an introduce themselves - putting a name to a
face, you included. What gives? You knew who I was. I often think this
crowd, and I am part of it, is a rather shy one when it comes to meeting in
physical space, in person. A bunch of wall flowers waiting for someone to
cross the room and say hello.

Scott,

I actually tried to. I was waiting for my turn to say hello, but I was
pressed for time, and I couldn't wait any longer. So, unfortunately I missed
you.

Before your presentation started, I was randomly approaching people to talk
to. I did meet some interesting people.

The more we rely on the Internet, the less we deal with people in real life.
I almost feel like I have to force myself to meet people in real life. It is
sort of like the way we now have to force ourselves to exercise in order to
stay healthy. Our modern life is seen to be convenient and efficient, but in
some ways, as long as we are humans, I feel that there are no shortcuts in
accomplishing something meaningful.

It amuses me that you sign this email [sgp], i.e. you give no indication of
who you are and make it very hard for anyone to introduce themselves. I dont
know about shy, but putting an identity to a tag is surely a starting point,
on or off line. Cheers, Ivan

well I had a really nice time…
Mostly due to t.whid (who came over and introduced himself) and Doron
(who
has to be the most hospitable man on the planet) and an great eccentric
artist called Nina

The space is just fab and I was amazed to find out that it was going to
all go and be replaced by something new. Give me the huge warehouse
space anytime. I didn't know who anyone
was either and kind of longed for badges so I could recognise names
but it
didn't seem that kind of gathering. I got the feeling that a lot
of people were really very happy with the anonymity of it - there
was a lot of people reading papers, taking seats across the room
on their own or
chatting in pairs.

What it lacked, I guess was a host. When I met the furtherfield gang
what
made it so terrific was what great hosts marc and ruth are. By the
end of the evening I knew everyone there, at least by name and what
they did. Partly I guess is that furtherfield is also their home
but also
because one of their great strengths is bringing people together. There
were more people at eyebeam and it has an organisational feel (rather
than a community one) but there did seem to be a central core that
knew one another who perhaps could have been more of a catalyst in

getting people talking. Sometimes though its just good to strike up a
conversation by chance - clive had great fun debating the state of
digital composition waiting outside the gents restroom
(which I had annexed as the female disabled loo was bust…who says its
different in america!)

I didn't get the first email that was saying that people diidn't come up
and introduce themselves so I don't know who wasn't being recognized.
Mind you I think that with pink hair, two wheels
and an english accent I'm pretty easy to spot too but would have been
amazed to have had lots of people introduce themselves who didn't
know I was going to be there - few people
(particularly artists) have that kind of confidence. I don't think
that's the influence of the internet, just basic 'shit what do I
say?' angst.

one more note on this:

usually the Upgrade is much more casual and not as many people
attend. Usually before the presentation Yael would have everyone in
the room introduce themselves (that's how i met Auria Harvey who is
just as interesting in person). She either simply forgot this time or
thought there were to many people for it to be feasible.

I agree with everyone's comments, it would have been best for some
introductions this time as there were lots of new people there.

take care

Well, I am very intrigued!

I don't get that involved on the raw conversations, preferring chats in
person, where its not so easy to pick over everything I say quite so
fastidiously ;-) therefore, as I am coming to NY for the Digital Salon
Vectors: Digital Art of Our Time symposium in April, I would be interested
to hear if there is an Upgrade around that time!

I am surprised by the lack of name tags though! An American friend of mine
led me to believe they were an integral part of a gathering in the US! She
even suggested them for a party she was having, but I managed to stop her as
it was a party mostly consisting of her family!

If there is an Upgrade around then, I could start to make my name tag now,
so that it is really special looking, and detracts from the fact no one will
know (or perhaps care) who I am! On the other hand, as you can't get them
here, and as I have a close friend flying in with some on Thursday, you will
perhaps know me by the amount of Krispy Kremes I can put away!

Charlotte

PS Have to put my vote in for furtherfield's skills! They rock!

Hi T.,

i too appreciate your recent wave of paparazzi pictures. aside from the copious fashion tips, the pics are humanizing, which is GOOD. i just went to a BD4D conference in atlanta and met some designer friends face to face for the first time. I found the experience very rewarding, much moreso than I though I would.

As net.werkerz, the "in real life thing" is supposed to be inconsequential (or at worst, detrimental). But it ain't, because {we = body + soul + spirit}, and (like it or hack it) 1/3 of that equation is body.

keep on w/ the force (don't stop),

It's not often that someone actually says something nice about us -
I'm putting just here, below - so my day ends with a smile.

Damn, I wish I was in NYC that day! Instead I was in Hollywood. Go
figure.

I've been meaning to make it to the upgrade for a while. At least I
still made it into last week's net.art society pages. Please introduce
yourself to this guy if you see him around somewhere:
