Just positive! - World Aids Day - 1 December 2002

PRESS RELEASE

On occasion of World Aids Day, 1 December 2002,
A Virtual Memorial www.a-virtual-memorial.org
is happy to launch the online show

"Just positive! - four HIV positive artists"

featuring:

Max Greenberg (New York, NY)
Ian Moyer (Morongo Valley, CA)
Michael Berube (New York, NY)
Alex Aleixo (Los Angeles, CA)

"Just positive!" is not only connected to the fact
that these artists are HIV positive -
which means the permanent life threatening aspect is always
present in most different ways -
but also that all of them found a way
in which the positive creative powers
lead to a positive direction full of life and perspectives
of different kind.

All of them are visual artists working in different media:

Max Greenberg found photography as that kind of medium for
expessing himself best.
In the beginning, his subjects were focussed on his identity of being gay
and HIV positive,
but in sequence, he explored his artistic powers also in wider circles,
for instance, the cityscape of New York.

Michael Berube, actually a musician and pop-singer
came to art, or better painting, only after being tested HIV positive.
In the beginning, reflecting his new situation of being "positive",
he was bound emotionally, conceptionally and formally, but he found his
artistic
liberation in sequence in exploring the human body, for instance.

Alex Aleixo plays with "gay identity" and the aspect "pin-up"
in his colourful digital collages. Male pin-ups
as they are known from gay magazines replace protagonists of motives from
classical Hollywood movies
and/or accompany their famours male of female stars. The results are
sometime surprising, sometimes ironic.

Different in his approach and work out is Ian Moyer,
The works selected for the show represent
only one aspect of his multi-facetted working:
installation works,
a mixture of free and applied art, a combination of
interior design, architectural, sculptural and free form elements
composed to installations of movements of forms and colours,
which express the strong and abunding will to live,
manifested also through the fact that the artist is executing
that kind of work with his own hands and body.
