New Net.Art: "Protest Pieces 1-5."

Protest Pieces, 1-5
New Internet Art by Eryk Salvaggio

Photographs of IMF protests today in Washington from the AP Wire were,
set to high contrast black and white, rendered to ascii and set against
a strobe of colors based on police lights. The "images" are oversized,
so you have to explore the scene in the photograph on your own, as if it
were your point of sight. The result is a swirl of non-identifiable
outlines and data, with an occasional face. Only the most exaggerated
faces are recognizable- more subtle forms and less exaggerated
expressions lose themselves against the black or the white, in the ascii
as it is in the crowd. I had originally considered a series of these
images based on crowds I was in, physically, to examine the frightening
hydra-effect of them, but these protest images jumped out at me so I
just did them.

The irony is that it only works right with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Hi Eryk
<Protest Pieces, 1-5>
These are very effective -I especially like #2&3, the
ones which are b&w.

< so you have to explore the scene in the photograph
> on your own, as if it >
& this works in one way very well-I quite like the
unusual 'interactivity'(much more hands on and fun
than clicking) but part of me wondered whether it
might have been effective to crop back just to the
faces, so that in a way the part then stands for the
whole.
It's been a day of protest- I just got back from the
fantastic 400,000 strong London anti war demo.
Michael.

And then what? Exploiting cheaply 'anti-war' protests?
That must make you an incredible artist–poignant and 'of the times'.

What's the 'irony' in that? Some drivel about corporations or
Microsoft?

No, eryk. Perfectly valid comments, which you're attempting to dismiss
by presenting idiotic 'disagreements' or that I 'dislike you'.
I neither agree nor disagree, this is not a philosophical, artistic
or otherwise debate, I don't agree or disagree, and your idiotic
knee-jerk is simple refusal of responsibility for your behavior.

Your 'latest' piece is cheap exploitative propaganda.
And that's not a matter of 'opinion'.

I saw a weird photo of a really sexy young protester with a look on her face
best described as that of Bernini's Theresa. She was being pushed in the
back by an old/tall/pudgy/pasty type dude, who was trying to get protesters
out of the street in DC. They were blocking traffic.

I think that E.L. Doctorow's "Book of Daniel" would be a good book for
people to re-read.
