Blank'the Walker Center for Contemporary Arts is an important online space =
for contemporary digital art'.

Are They Really?

I recently posted a link submission to Walker Arts center suggesting that w=
e would put a link on our site from www.furtherfield.org if they could do s=
ame for us.

furtherfield are an independent collective that has been hosting and suppor=
ting art and net projects for about six years now. We have gain finance by =
independent sources until recently (out of our own income).

I got an email back saying 'We set up links that have a direct relationship=
to Walker, ie: community partner, copartner on an event, sponsorship, rela=
ted to an exhibition, etc. Unfortunately, I can't create the link to your s=
ite since there is not a relationship with us'.

I believe that this is wrong and reflects that the policy is institutionall=
y bound, an isolationist default and does not in any way wish to be open to=
other net arts (groups) outside their own minimal agenda.

By only linking with in-house groups - this gives off the message that they=
are not sharing a platform with independent Internet art collectives. It s=
eems that in reality, their function is to gatekeeper and not share amongst=
the many…

They should question this policy immediately.

Marc.

I'm playing Devils Advocate here (aren't i always though), but I
don't see any contradiction in their (innocuous) quote. "important"
for some art. They aren't saying "everyone's art", just that there
is some art for which this site is "important".

think of it this way. Imagine if EVERY site that had similar or
better reason to be linked by the Walker, came to them with such a
proposal. At least 5000 sites could say they are doing some kind of
work in the arts, on the web. For each site to add one link would be
effortless.

But is someone at the Walker supposed to add 5000+ links? More work
for them. the Walker gains nothing. (assume most folks who visit a
random arty site are gonna already know about the Walker. They don't
need you to tell them.

Then what use would it be to have your site listed about 1/3 of the
way down (assuming alphabetical order) in a list of 5000 links, just
names, no comments. There's no way they could take time to look at
them all and vote. Nonetheless, only a dozen or so may get chosen as
the top links. Which is basically what they have. In an un-curated
list of 5000, only the first 3 or 4 will ever get seen anyway.
Freedom and sharing is of no use to you here.

I'm sure a place like the Walker has gotten scores of such requests
already. it's probably a really cool thing that you got a
personalized rejection. Be happy someone saw your name. Doubt they
have to.

That's my gut reaction though. Hope it's helpful.

Hi Judson,

Your probably right - to be honest, I can't be bothered with arguing at the=
moment. It just seemed wrong somehow, my intuitive and emotional state tol=
d me different from recollective, objective rule…my angst against the wla=
ker gallery is too minor - it was a mistake. I'll be less reactionary next =
time, there is so much ugliness out there at the moment. I just feel like l=
ying down in a large lake and disappearing…as the world of hatred and mal=
e domination over other peoples lives continues to kill all that lives. Sor=
ry for sending a bummer of an email…this must be one of my off days.
