[San Francisco, CA] Local 411 is a public art project featuring sound
installation and live performances based on the lives of residents of
the area prior to the redevelopment of what is now known as Yerba Buena
Gardens, the Museum of Modern Art and Moscone Convention Center.

The Yerba Buena Redevelopment Project was long in the making and has
rewarded the city with a cultural and economic hub in close vicinity to
the downtown shopping areas. Much praise has been given to this
development project. Yet the battle for this transformation was not
bloodless, 4000 people were displaced, without compensation. Local 411
is an art project which seeks to reconnect for a short time with the
past of the neighborhood and to ask questions of those who use it today.

The collaborative team of Ian Pollock and Janet Silk will be using the
everyday technology of the telephone to install a temporary public
monument in the Yerba Buena Redevelopment Zone. The project features an
inter-active, call-in voicemail system, which plays stories to the
caller. This voicemail system can be accessed by calling 415-522-0605.
It also allows for people to leave their own accounts of their
experiences of the Yerba Buena Area. An additional part of this
installation will be a series of telephone calls placed to public
telephones in the Yerba Buena area. The public is encouraged to pick up
the telephone and engage one-on-one with a live performer. Each
performance will be based on a cast of characters generated from stories
of former residents of the area.

Administered by New Langton Arts, with funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts and the Presenting and Commissioning Program, The
Rockefeller Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts,
the San Francisco Publicity and Advertising Fund's Hotel Tax/Grants for
the Arts, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
