Asylum--Call for Participation

Shelter + refuge + exclusion + security + condemnation + immunity

Call for Participation

Between two and four artists are required for the following project–

Asylum is an experimental digital project, part funded by Channel and
co-ordinated by Terry Taylor. The project will involve between three and
five artists, including Terry Taylor, working collaboratively, using
email technology to explore the potential of HTML code to construct
interlinking pages of text, sound and image.

The intention is for each artist to construct pages in response to the
theme of "Asylum" and in response to each others contributions. Each
artist will have access to each other's HTML code and the incorporated
image, text and/or sound files for reference or manipulation. The
underlying philosophy is to experiment with the conventions of the
medium itself, i.e. HTML, to investigate the creative possibilities of
interlinking the representation of ideas in the form of web pages.
Although there is no rigidly defined outcome it is expected that the
results will be assembled to form a publicly accessible web site. The
viewer will be able to navigate through an interconnected series of
pages that will represent the development of ideas, influences and
responses made by the participating artists.

Previous Experience

It is preferred that the participating artists NOT have a high
competency in web page construction but should have a working knowledge
of its principles and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in
exploring this medium. It is envisaged that a more interesting outcome
might be generated by artists who have little experience of web page
design, than "web masters" with established ways of working. The project
is supported by Channel, London and Lighthouse, Brighton so some
technical advice will be available and it is expected that the
participants will share information and knowledge throughout the
project.

Technical Requirements

Participants should have access to an on-line machine with a web browser
and an email account. Gif Builder and Sound Edit 16 could be used for
animation and sound but this is not essential and if prospective
participants are not familiar with any of these packages, help in
obtaining them and information about their use will be circulated and
shared. Participants can also use any other software and hardware that
they might require to generate, input and manipulate sound, image and
text.
