CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

MArch + MFA Dual Degree Program
Departments of Architecture and Media Study
University at Buffalo, State University of New York

http://cva.ap.buffalo.edu/mac/

APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 15, 2008

Computing has changed the way we think, feel, and operate in the
modern world. This has profound consequences for the way we conceive,
perceive and interact within built environments. Moving beyond screen-
based simulations and interactive environments, media-architecture
hybrids incorporate both the virtual and material dimensions of
everyday life. As sites of practice for media, architecture and
computing converge, new avenues for research and experimentation
arise that require an expanded knowledgebase. Recognizing this
challenge, the departments of Architecture and Media Study offer a
dual degree program in Media, Architecture & Computing, one of the
only such programs in the country.

This trans-disciplinary program offers dual terminal degrees, the
fully accredited Master of Architecture (MArch) and the Master of
Fine Arts (MFA). Working with distinguished faculty in the
departments of Architecture and Media Study, students conduct
research and creative explorations in responsive architecture,
robotics, networked performance, physical computing, locative media,
pervasive gaming, kinetic structures, parametric design, and digital
fabrication, among others. With a focus on providing a critical
context for experimental practice, this program provides the advanced
skills necessary to engage contemporary confluences of architecture
and computational media.

This program combines the 2-year accredited M.Arch. and the M.F.A.
for a total of 94 credit hours for applicants holding an undergaduate
degree in Architecture, or the 3.5-year accredited M.Arch. and the
M.F.A. for a total of 145 credit hours for students for applicants
from other fields.
