Garden of Memespelunk

Garden of Memespelunk, creative lab & collected works of Juria Yoshikawa

Location in SL: http://slurl.com/secondlife/North%20Dolores/128/104/32/

All are welcome to my newly created virtual art garden located on a remote island in Second Life. Feel free to come and explore my new and past installations, kinetic light art and sound experiments. This is an on-going project so it will be changing frequently. I recommend viewing with sun on midnight and sound volume on (preferably with headphones.) I love feedback of any kind so please IM me your thoughts. Happy memespelunking!

Wow, when I saw that I had email from someone named 'Lance' I thought
I'd been projected into the move, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls."
Alas, I haven't.

But what and how does this interact socially?
When Patrick talks about interventions in SL I get that.
It makes sense to me.
Like so many SL art works, this is no more than a VRML display which I can navigate around and add very marginal input.
What is the social context?
Why is the music so &Varese& in a major key?
Was the music formulated in a way that is reflective or ecologically pertinent to SL?
It's a display of a some nice looking bent primitives in a new envelope.
Please see:

For me SL is still The Palace meets VRML…, in a proprietary environment.

Eric,
I appreciate your critical thoughts. You've made good points especially around the social aspect. While these works weren't meant as only experiments in the social aspects of virtual art, several of my exhibits have - specifically "Exhibit 4" and "Blink" had very collaborative and participatory events attached to the them. I urge you to look a bit deeper at some of the videos showing these events on YouTube under my sl name Juria Yoshikawa.

Can you get any of this working on your machine? I couldn't. Using what plugin, if so? Have a URL for that plugin?

It seems totally abandoned.

ja?

The Palace became popular around the same time as Worlds Chat and
Alphaworld, which were 3D environments.

VRML multi-user servers tended to be proprietary. Blaxxun still isn't
Free Software.

The SL client is Free and the server and avatar formats are under
discussion. So SL as a whole is on the way to being Free.

Even if SL is *only* as interesting as the multi-user VRML of a decade
ago, it has two important advantages over VRML 2:

1. It is complete and it works. VRML 2 destroyed any company that tried
to implement it and VRML 2 plug-ins were buggy for years.

2. It exists at a time where people have the computing power and the
experience of distributed creativity to actually use it.

Perhaps SL is just the world catching up with the VR of a decade ago,
with the technology, economics and social structures in place to cope
with that false start. But even this is quite something.

try the cortona vrml plugin,

many of the works seem broken, well 10 years have passed since these were put online, I imagine the SL worlds will be long gone in a decade as well.
the Julien Van piece looks like a SL sculpture.
