When I was at Art School, I would try to be as early as I could. The
caretaker, with whom I'd struck up a friendship, let me in, and I'd
sit on the floor of the empty studio, long before the other students
arrived. I loved just to sit there, among the paint spatters and
splashes, the worn stools, the easels, and dream.

When I was still doing real time artists, I showed one artist who had
taken hand crafting to its extreme. She showed canvasses that, very
literally, she herself had made. Having taken many months to build a
furnace, she had melted down the sheet of iron roofing above her
childhood bedroom window, carefully and meticulously taking weeks
fashioning the tacks to fasten the canvas. From the tree she herself
had planted as a small child, in the garden of her ancesteral home,
in many months, she cut and meticulously planed the canvas
stretchers, and then, in many weeks, cut and planed from the same
tree the keys to stretch the canvas, and then, in many days,
constructing and adjusting the stretcher. And then, of the very fibre
of the canvas, spending months on the building and the reproduction
of the fibre from the smallest elements imaginable, spending weeks on
the winding of the fibres to the thread, spending days on the weaving
of the thread to the canvas, and then, after that, spending hours on
the attaching of the canvas to the stretcher she had made, and then
back, spending months on the building and the reproduction of the
smallest elements imaginable of the collagen, then weeks on the
building of the lumps of the resulting rabbit skin glue, and then
days on the application of the glue on the surface of the canvas.
