A tv is a human invented technical device , which produces (moving)
images and sounds through media space.
In the hands of the malevolent it is a means to propagate ideas,
thoughts and opinions which are not ours.
In the hands of the benevolent it is a means to express our
feelings , thoughts and opinions to share with each other.

The TV does not produce moving images and sounds. People produce
moving images and sounds and relay them through TVs, directly into
people's homes. That's what makes what you say in the next sentence
important. A machine that produces moving images and sounds can't be
malevolent. That requires a human.

It's irreverent to include "TV" [in it's own right] within any discourse of
the present. TV used basic electronics controlling an analogue display (more
than 100 years ago). This was superseded by digital then digital using HD.
The signals and the decoding equipment it requires are; a computer. The
display resolution even matches a computer screen. It is a computer. They
converged a while ago. It's irreverent to separate TV from a computer; it's
simply one of the many tasks people rely on computers to perform.

Personally, I have never even owned a TV.

Explain the "must."

That there is a private individual despite the horde –> everyone is a genius ?

I am reminded of how Umberto Eco saying that he only truly felt
connected to the medieval world, and that he only knew the modern
world through the TV.

TV is TV. It doesn't matter where the physical location of the set may or
may not be.

Everything that could be discussed about TV has been. There is no point at
all in discussing what already has been. Read what has already been written.
There is plenty of it.

There are now other [new] things to discuss.

There are now other [new] things to discuss.

It's also a slang term for a transvestite. As is an old informal term
for a transistor radio.

There's something sublimated in all this about the play of cultural
signifiers of identity.

It is not about tv but about what represents tv .

It is not about us and them but about me and you.

So, it is not the thing, but the verbalization of the thing. Or the
actions with and from the thing.
When we finally arrive in an objectificated reality, all what is left
are actions to impose on things.

That is to say: tv is not subjectificating us anymore but instead we
are objectificating tv.
The latter is a most wanted situation.

This whole shift of meaning in mediascape, was prepared by the
pioneering works , of for instance , Nam June Paik , John Cage cum suis.

Cheers

Well put, Andreas.

Before: characters one identifies with, generic enough to invite
vicarious (–> subjective) experience a la Scott McCloud's "masking
effect."

Now: Reality TV –> the viewer laughs at ridiculous people. One laughs
at how distorted they are – the first and most primitive kind of
laughter, Aristotelian laughter – the laughter that distances –>
objectifies.
