In a discussion about the interview David Bowie gave to
NYT, [1], Dr. Spork, posted the text with the title "Only
rebels left are old!", [2] :
Am I the only young person who notices that the only people
who express their dissent at stupid things in this world
today are old? This is a terrible sign! I seriously think
that historians will view this decade as the "era of new
conformity," sort of like the 50s without the commies.
I'm serious: Take for example the only people you see
speaking out in public against the idiotic "War on
Terror"–they are old! Even academics who find it just as
stupid as I do keep their mouths shut, even if they have
tenure.
The same goes for this "Intellectual Property" debate. I
would be shocked if there weren't many young artists who
agree with every word that Bowie says about the
subject. Still, they keep a low profile and don't rock the
boat, because we live in a climate where that gets you
severely punished. I wasn't there, but I suspect in the 60's
and 70's people faced the same dilemmas, but they said "fuck
it, I'll say what I think and see what happens." But then
again, maybe the government and the corporations have us
under a tighter clamp now than any other time in Western
history since constitutions started being written.
Sure, we all have a right to free speech, but the system has
made it so that speaking freely is severely against our
interest. This means that even though we won't go to jail,
we will get fired, spied upon, harassed, and vilified as
friends of terrorists. (How long will it take before
somebody argues that abolishing IP laws would be "caving in
to terrorism"? Surely they will find some stupid, tenuous
connection.)
Anyway, this era makes me sick. You people suck. I might as
well burn my books now to save you the trouble, because when
these old- school rebels die, nobody will raise their voice
in protest.

it does take 10 seconds to know that a world of "open speech" is
desirable, implying a total public decision and caretaking.
the other half is called "privacy," meaning statistical bodies
used for finance, body and business management. posit that the
"era" (liberalism) needs these and needs to restrict use.
if true (individuals only as "open" as telephones,) it is the
unpleasant field described. different species of speech will

Hi Karl, let me explain. This is an international group therapy
session. We are experimenting with severe cases of techno-dimentia,
folks who become unduly obsessed with their machines.
I am Judson, one of the patients here, in the process of recovering.
It's a long battle for me. You'll find a lot of folks here make up
silly names for themselves. They may sound like they must be
references to Star Trek episodes. Try not to laugh though and they
will be your friend.
Feel free to stay and observe or partake in the ongoing session as
much as you are comfortable. As you get to know the group, they may
hand you what appear to be meaningless gymnastics for your browser.
That is their way of letting you know they like you. If you have a
refrigerator, you can put the stuff up there with a magnet.
If someone hands you a virus, don't be alarmed. These people are
just like the rest of us. It's really not their fault many never
matured past 4th grade. Usually, this would be the result of an
accident, however this seems to be that they grew up as healthy
programmers but are still only a few years old as artists. Simply
smile and dispose of the work as soon as possible.
Here, in these little groups, we believe anything is art. The
programming equivalent of scribbling is very popular in our little
world. For many of us, that's really all we do. So without this
group we would have nobody to love us. This can be a really good
place to help us grow.
But Fruitcake here, is one of our most prolific artists ever! Isn't
that right, Fruitcake? Fruitcake made a video all by himself a few
years ago and now he writes about it 16 times a day! Everybody just
loves Fruitcake. Ain't that right, Fruitcake? Yea, you tell im.
He's so eager to please.

well, i was lurking for one week, now posting for one week.
i observed that rhizome's traditional role as a platform for the insane
has really abated this season. the rest, unsophisticate and honest, is
"okey." i dont, however, read any discussion of higher mathematics, or
higher art for that matter. we're good living on the ground. if we are.
