Wrestling with Angels

New on The Hyperliterature Exchange for March 2005 - Edward Picot reviews "Sampler", a DVD+ from Alan Sondheim, which contains close to five gigabytes of text, images and video.
Sondheim is one of the best-known and longest-established new media artists. Since 1994 he has been developing a huge project which he calls the "Internet Text", an "extended meditation on cyberspace"; and the "Sampler" DVD+ provides a representative cross-section of this work.

This should be read - Edward compares Alan Sondheim to
Bach -well, Bach or whatever, he's by a mile the
nearest we have yet to that sort of giant & this
review certainly articulates well some of the delights
and rewards of this extraordinary body of work.
It does seem a tad meta to comment on the commentary,
but Edward's review ( and his critical writing in
general) does generously repay attention.
Even where one might take issue with details it's a
model of careful attention and reflection, critical
but generous in spirit and presented in crystal clear
language.
If only more new media criticism were this mindful of
the object of attention and forgetful of itself!
