Alexander Rose, the executive director of The Long Now Foundation,
will give a presentation about the foundation and its activities on
27th of January in Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
The presentation is the first event organised by the PLAN*B FOR
ARKADIANMAKI project. The events continue on the following
week with discussions on topics "Our right to vote - a limited form
of democracy?", "Utopias of democracy / Brand New Worlds" and
"The Public Opinion". The discussions bring together a diverse mix
of people working and experimenting politics, including Per Norback
(Demoex direct democracy experiment), Kaisa Eskola (Attac), Jon
Brunberg (Utopian World Championship), Paavo Arhinmaki
(Vasemmistonuoret), Oliver Kochta & Tellervo Kalleinen
(Micronations), member of Finnish Parliament Irina Krohn, Jiri
Rasanen (Leader of The Free World project) and many more!

The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide a counterpoint to
today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better"
thinking. The foundation aims to creatively foster responsibility
in the framework of the next 10,000 years through a series of
ambitious real world projects. The foundation was established by
a group of people who have been influencial in helping us understand
the social and cultural effects of technological development. These
people include Stewart Brand (founder of Whole Earth Catalogue
and co-founder of Global Business Network), Brian Eno ('the
father of ambient music') and Kevin Kelly (founder of WIRED
magazine).

Per Norback is a 35-year-old teacher who has put direct democracy
through the internet in practise in his home town Vallentuna, located
north of Stockholm. After an intensive discussion about democracy
he and his students decided to start a non-partisan political party
that would make all their decisions with the help of a specially
developed e-democracy solution for the internet. They called this
party Demoex that stands for "Democracy Experiment". The Demoex
internet system is open for all the inhabitants in the city of
Vallentuna to join. Demoex took one seat in the local community
council of Vallentuna in the elections of 2002.
