I'm not one to be romantic about technology, but that is quite
beautiful - the size is limited from what they say and they're very coy
about showing too much ..the largest screen they think possible.. the
video and several pictures which have rows of shovels behind the stars
and stripes are a bit bizarre

I think they've been doing this sort of thing with steam for quite some time
now. The problem with steam is that it eventually condenses and everything
gets wet. There was a Finnish research agency/university/firm/whatever that
managed to do a dry version. If I recall correctly they exhibited it at
Siggraph a year or two ago and it was a big image. They projected the Mona
Lisa onto it and people were walking through it.
